Grab fined for incorrect Vietnamese map

Ride-hailing service provider Grab has been fined VND60 million (USD2,553) for using a map which incorrectly identified Vietnamese territorial possessions.

Ride-hailing service provider Grab has been fined VND60 million (USD2,553) for using a map which incorrectly identified Vietnamese territorial possessions.

The map was used on both Android and iOS platforms of Grab app last week. Among islands in the Truong Sa Archipelago, only Son Ca and Sinh Ton were labelled with their Vietnamese names while others included English or Chinese names.

Vanh Khan (Mischief) Reef was labelled with English and Chinese names. Chu Thap (Fiery Cross) Reef, which China has occupied, was labelled as Nansha District.

The HCM City Department of Information and Communications decided to fine Grab VND60 million for the violation.

Grab issued an apology, saying that it is working with the firm which provides the map to amend the information.
