Fisherman survives 24 hours adrift at sea

A fisherman from the Central Highlands Province of Dak Lak survived 24 hours adrift at sea by clinging to a foam board before being rescued by a cargo ship.

At around 4 pm on August 11, Tran Ngoc Thanh, 53, and two other fishermen were fishing in waters off Gia Lai Province when their boat suddenly broke down, prompting them to swim further out to sea in search of help.

Two of the fishermen were spotted and rescued by another boat, while Thach was swept further out to sea. Thach’s family posted on social media to seek the community’s support for the search.

At about 4.20 pm on August 12, Thach was rescued by a fishing boat off the Quang Ngai coast after 24 hours adrift at sea. He was immediately brought aboard for initial medical care, and the boat owner reported the case to authorities for assistance.

Thach’s health has stabilised, and he can eat, though he is experiencing leg pain. By the morning of August 13, he had returned home safely.

The fisherman’s family shared on social media that Thach clung to a foam board, using a nail to hook his sleeve and keep from slipping into the sea.

They expressed their gratitude to the fishing boat crew and authorities for rescuing him, and to the online community for sharing information and helping them find Thach.
