An exhibition and fair celebrating on a decade of construction and development in the Mekong Delta region opened in Song Hau urban zone, Can Tho city on April 27, to commemorate the 37th anniversary of the Liberation of the South and National Reunification Day (April 30).

More than 1,200 stalls representing 480 businesses in Can Tho and other Mekong provinces are on display at the exhibition, showcasing the socio-economic achievements and development of the region after ten years of implementing Politburo Resolution 21-NQ/TW dated January 20, 2003, on plans for socio-economic development and regional security in the 2001-2010 period.

A variety workshops on promoting investment, sustainable agricultural development, and developmental orientations are also being held, along with many cultural and sports activities.

Over the past ten years, annual economic growth in the region has increased by 11.7% and it has become the national leader in rice and seafood production and exports. Its poverty rate has dropped from 27% in 2001 to 10% in 2010, according to the country’s new poverty standards.

Addressing the opening ceremony, Deputy Prime Minister Vu Van Ninh, who is also Head of the Southwest region Steering Committee, praised the region's significant accomplishments and the great efforts local Party Committees, the armed forces and people have made to regional socio-economic development, social security and defence over the last decade.

He added that the four-day exhibition is a good opportunity to introduce the potential and advantages of the Mekong Delta region to both domestic and international investors.

The Deputy PM urged relevant ministries, agencies and local authorities to aim for developing the Mekong Delta region into a key national economic zone and large-scale agricultural production area.

He also suggested the region focus on improving transportation infrastructure and irrigation systems; strengthening co-operation among localities in the region to promote socio-economic development and build new rural areas; and developing high quality human resources to serve the region’s economic restructuring; in addition to combining socio-economic development with ensuring social welfare, maintaining national defence and security, and protecting natural resources and the environment.

The exhibition and fair, held jointly by the Southwest Steering Committee, in collaboration with central ministries, related agencies and localities in the region, will last until May 1.

The same day, a conference on promoting investment was held within the framework of the exhibition to discuss ways to attract more domestic and foreign investors to the region.
