Erosion threatens Lao Cai residents

Authorities in the northern mountainous province of Lao Cai have declared a state of emergency following serious erosion in a local residential area.

Since mid-March, erosion has occurred at a residential area on Road 23/9 in Pom Han Ward in Lao Cai City, affecting up to 31 households.

Several houses have developed cracks, ranging from 10 to 25 centimetres wide. The cracks have extended deep into pavements and the yards of nearby households.

Road 23/9 has also faced erosion and cracks.

The area was also severely hit by Typhoon Yagi in September last year.

Local authorities have assisted and encouraged affected residents to relocate to safer places.

Relevant agencies and localities have been tasked with assessing the damaged sites and infrastructure and proposing appropriate solutions to address the situation.
