Danang studies USD 10.4bn urban rail linking two airports

Danang is studying its first urban railway, a 103km line linking two international airports, with operations targeted for 2032.

On April 22, city authorities said they had approved a proposal for Dai Quang Minh Real Estate JSC, part of THACO, to conduct surveys and prepare a pre feasibility report under a public private partnership model. The company is expected to submit its proposal before October 2026.

Under the plan, the railway would require total investment of about VND 265.97 trillion (approximately USD 10.4 billion). The route would begin at Terminal 1 of Danang International Airport and end at Chu Lai Airport.

The project is divided into two phases. The first phase, spanning more than 30km with 14 stations, would connect Danang airport with Hoi An. The second phase, nearly 74km long with 10 stations, would extend the line from Hoi An to Chu Lai Airport.

THACO said that if approval procedures and investor selection progress smoothly, construction could begin in February 2027. Drawing on its experience with major infrastructure projects in Ho Chi Minh City, the company aims to accelerate implementation once officially selected, targeting operations by 2032.

City authorities have instructed the developer to coordinate closely with relevant departments to clarify the investment model. The proposal must demonstrate feasibility, particularly in long term operation, maintenance and financial sustainability.

At a working session on April 20, city leaders urged THACO to finalise its proposal promptly. The finance department has been tasked with reviewing procedures, advising on investor selection and ensuring a synchronised implementation plan.

If realised, the project would be Danang’s first urban railway and is expected to become a key transport corridor, strengthening regional connectivity and easing pressure on road networks linking major tourism and industrial hubs.
