Danang residents move to protect vehicles as Typhoon Fengshen approaches

As Typhoon Fengshen approaches with forecasts of prolonged heavy rain, Danang residents are taking precautions to protect their vehicles and homes from flooding.

Tran Thanh Nguyen, who lives on Me Nhu Street, bought a 6x12-metre tarpaulin for VND 500,000 (USD 19) to safeguard his car. Using a flood-prevention method popular in recently flood-hit Thai Nguyen Province, he spread the tarp, parked his BMW on it, then wrapped and secured it. He said the cover could help the car float and keep water out if flooding occurs.

At the Hoa Khanh apartment complex, hundreds of residents moved their motorbikes from basement parking areas to upper-floor corridors to avoid inundation.

During a storm preparedness meeting on October 20, Danang Deputy Chairman Tran Nam Hung urged residents to move vehicles to higher ground and avoid basements or low-lying areas, recalling how dozens of cars were swept away during recent floods in Thai Nguyen.

The National Centre for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting predicts 400-700 mm of rain in Danang between October 22 and 27, with localised totals exceeding 900 mm. Officials warn of flash floods, landslides, and widespread inundation, urging residents to secure their homes and belongings and stay alert to weather warnings.

Several wards in Danang have announced school closures due to the approaching storm. Preschools, primary schools, and lower secondary schools in Ngu Hanh Son District will close from October 22, while other wards, including An Hai, Hai Chau, and Cam Le, have implemented similar suspensions.
