In his match against underdog Oliver Barbosa from the Philippines (World No.85), Liem (World No.29) scarified his rook in exchange for his opponent’s bishop in the 41st move and then checkmate the king in the next two moves.

Meanwhile, his teammate Son (World No.85) took full advantage of holding the white pieces and convincingly beat Russia’s Vladimir Akopian (World No.44), who is much stronger than himself.

The event is being held at Scandic Hotel in Tromso, Norway from August 10-September 9 and the winner will be awarded US$100,000 in cash while those winning the first round received US$6,000 and the second one US$10,000, respectively.
