Artillery shell unearthed in Quang Ngai

An environmental worker in the central province of Quang Ngai found a half-metre artillery shell at the foot of a tree while clearing grass.

The shell was found along Road 23/3 in Nghia Hanh Commune, partly buried under soil and rocks, with its casing already corroded.

The local police cordoned off the site, set up danger signs and reported the case to the Quang Ngai military command. Initial assessments suggested the shell was a 105mm artillery left over from the American War.

The police and military engineers co-operated to dispose of the artillery shell.

In August, a resident of Tu Nghia Commune, Quang Ngai, also detected two mortar shells with intact fuzes while fishing in the Bau Giang River. Military engineers later collected and safely detonated the shells.
