Odon Vallet scholarships worth a total of VND3 billion (US$142,000) were awarded to 390 outstanding students in southern provinces on Friday by the Rencontre du Vietnam (Meet Vietnam) Organisation in HCM City.

At least 265 are at schools and another 125 are students and master's degree candidates at universities in the southern region.
Each student was given a scholarship worth VND7.5 million ($357) and master's degree candidates were awarded VND12 million ($570).
According to Odon Vallet, the scholarship foundation this year decided to increase the value of the awards after seeing the impact of high inflation on people's lives.
For the 2013-14 school year, the foundation has awarded scholarships to 2,188 students and young researchers in the country, with a total value of more than VND18.8 billion ($895,000).
The foundation has been active in Vietnam since 2001. Professor Odon Vallet spent his savings to encourage students to continue their studies, awarding a total of 17,000 scholarships for Vietnamese students, with a total of VND80 billion ($3.8 million).
In the first year, it awarded 800 scholarships in Vietnam. In 2011, 2,250 scholarships were awarded.
