The congress was originally scheduled to run from January 19 to 25, with 1,586 delegates representing more than 5.6 million Party members nationwide.

It has elected a presidium of 16 Politburo members, a secretariat of five members and a credentials committee of 13 members.

The congress is due to vote to elect 180 full members and 20 alternate members of the Party Central Committee.

A fireworks display will be held near My Dinh National Stadium in Hanoi on the evening of January 23 to celebrate the success of the congress.

The 30-minute display, starting at 8.10 pm, is expected to be the largest fireworks event ever staged in the capital and will be followed by a special arts programme.
