Le Tan Gia, 46, residing in Hoi An City, was arrested and faced prosecution by the Quang Nam Police Department on February 7 for violating food safety and hygiene regulations.
According to Quang Nam Police, Gia, who worked as a bartender for a restaurant in Hoi An City, had used 70-percent medical alcohol, mixing it with water, lemonade and sugar to make limoncello on December 24.
He brought the drink to the two South African tourists, Ottson Greta Marie, 33, and Els Arno Quinton, 36, who were staying in a resort villa in Cam Thanh Commune.
"After taking the drinks, the couple suffered serious methanol poisoning, leading to their death," the police said. "Their bodies were found on December 26 in the villa, without any signs of physical trauma, violence or a break-in."
Police have found and seized several used alcohol bottles at the crime scene.
