Vietnam ranks sixth among students studying in the US

Vietnamese rank sixth among foreign students studying in the US, according to Open Doors Report on International Educational Exchange, released on November 15th.

The report said that the number of Vietnamese students in the US in 2016 was 14.3% up on 2015. Up to 21,403 Vietnamese students are studying in the US.

The US has seen a growth of Vietnamese students annually over the past. Most of Vietnamese students follow tertiary education. In 2015, up to 67.2% of Vietnamese students studied at American universities, with 15.1% attending masters courses.

US Ambassador to Vietnam Ted Osius said the increased numbers would boost the relationship between the two countries.

The US tops the worldwide in attracting international students with 4.5 million.

According to the Vietnamese Ministry of Education and Training, around 125,000 Vietnamese students went abroad in the 2013-14 academic year, a 15% increase from the previous year. Total spending on overseas education amounted to about 1% of the country’s gross domestic product in 2013.
