Hanoi's flower hub falls silent ahead of Vietnamese Women's Day

Me Linh Commune, known as Hanoi's rose hub, is unusually quiet as Vietnamese Women's Day (October 20) is approaching.

Flower fields in Me Linh, located about 30 kilometres from central Hanoi, have been hardest hit by Typhoon Yagi. Most of the rose fields have died, while the surviving plants are struggling to grow, and the flowers are failing to bloom.

Instead of preparing flowers for Vietnamese Women's Day as usual, locals go to the fields to spray pesticides and care for the plants.

Nguyen Thi Tuyen, who has 20 years of experience growing flowers, said that last year, on October 20, her family earned a profit of nearly VND20 million (USD739.65). However, their entire flower field was damaged and had to be replanted, making it impossible to harvest in time for Vietnamese Women's Day.

"The replanted flowers remain small. If the weather is favourable, they will be harvested for the Lunar New Year Tet holiday instead," Tuyen added.

Farmers in Me Linh are actively tending to their roses, hoping for a bountiful harvest during the Tet holiday to recover from the losses caused by Typhoon Yagi.

The once vibrant flower market in Me Linh is now deserted. With many traders forced to source flowers from other localities, Typhoon Yagi's impact on the local economy is palpable.

Each rose in Me Linh is sold at VND3,500-4,000.
