Typhoon Yagi's death toll rises to 24, three remains missing

At least 24 people have been killed as Typhoon Yagi, the most powerful one in the East Sea in the past 30 years, ripped through northern Vietnam on Saturday, according to the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development.

The latest report from the ministry showed that as of 6 pm on September 8, Typhoon Yagi had left 24 dead including six in Sapa Town in Lao Cai Province, five in Quang Ninh Province, two in Haiphong City, one in Hai Duong Province, four in Hanoi, four in Hoa Binh, one in Yen Bai Province, and one in Lang Son.


A factory in Haiphong City is heavily damaged by Typhoon Yagi on September 7.

229 others were injured, who were mostly from Quang Ninh Province (157 people), and Haiphong City (40), the report said.

Meanwhile, three other people have remained missing including one in Bac Giang Province, and two in Tuyen Quang Province.

A total of 8,017 houses were damaged, and 109,382 hectares of rice were flooded and damaged with the two provinces of Thai Binh and Hai Duong suffering the most.

Heavy rain and strong winds caused by Typhoon Yagi have disrupted power supply in several localities, including Quang Ninh, Haiphong, Thai Binh, and Hanoi leaving hundreds of thousands of households without power.

Yagi has continued to cause heavy rains in many northern provinces, especially in the Northwest region, with rainfall ranging from 100 to 200mm, with some areas reaching 400mm. Two deadly landslides occurred in Hoa Binh and Lao Cai provinces on September 8, killing 10 people and injuring 10 others.
