Six dead in Sapa landslide

At least six people have died and nine others been injured in a landslide which occurred in the northern tourist town of Sapa on Sunday afternoon.

According to a report from local authorities, the tragic accident occurred at 1 pm when a large amount of rock and soils fell from a 20-metre-high mountain onto four houses in Muong Hoa Commune.

"There were 26 people inside the houses at that time and nine managed to flee while the others were buried by the landslide," the report said.

Rescue forces were sent to the area and found six bodies in the debris at 3.30 pm. Four of them were identified as two women, 68-year-old Vang Thi Thao and 25-year-old Giang Thi Chu, an one-year-old boy, Chau Gia Hung, and a newborn baby boy, Vang Van Vien. Two others haven't been identified yet. 

Meanwhile, nine injured people have been sent to a local hospital for treatment and they are currently in stable health.

Due to the impact of the Storm Yagi, Sapa Town saw heavy rains between 7am on September 7 to 1 pm on September 8 with total rainfall of nearly 150 mm.

Early this morning, four people in a family were also killed and one other injured in a landslide triggered by heavy rain in Hoa Binh Province's Da Bac District.

It is forecasted that heavy rains will continue in many northern provinces in the coming days and flash floods and landslides may occur in mountainous areas.
