An increasing number of children in Ho Chi Minh City have been hospitalised for respiratory diseases despite the peak season not yet having arrived.

Doctor Nguyen Hoang Phong, Head of Respiratory Department 1 at Children's Hospital 2, said that over the past two weeks, the department had seen a 20-25 percent increase in patient numbers compared to one month ago.

Currently, the department's emergency room is treating approximately 20 children, which represents 10-15 percent of the total number of hospitalised patients. The majority of these children are under three years of age.

According to Dr Phong, the annual peak of respiratory illnesses typically occurs in November. The hospital is taking preventive measures in preparation for this peak period.

At Children's Hospital No. 1, the number of children hospitalised for respiratory problems has almost doubled compared to a week ago.

Doctor Truong Huu Khanh, Vice President of the HCM City Infectious Disease Association, said that the hospital witnessed a considerable increase in respiratory illnesses between September and December every year.

So far this year, Children's Hospital 1 has received a similar number of respiratory patients as in the same period last year.

Respiratory problems strongly develop in two peak seasons: when the weather turns from cool to hot and shifts from hot to slightly chilly (from October to December). Most hospitalisations are related to bronchiolitis, with children under six affected the most.

Parents are advised to be alert for early signs of pneumonia in children to take them to hospital for timely medical examination.
