In Lam Dong Province, coffee farmer Bui Minh Thao said she has 21 hectares of coffee trees ready for harvest.

"We won't have a good crop this year with low output due to unfavourable weather," Thao said. "But we're still lucky as the prices have risen sharply around our harvest season."

In neighbouring Kon Tum Province, another farmer, Nguyen Thi Chien, also said her family had four hectares of coffee. Due to serious drought this year, many trees have died or given poor-quality fruits. However, she's still enjoying good profits thanks to high prices.

"Fresh coffee cherries are being sold at between VND20,000-22,000 per kilo while dried coffee beans have prices of up to VND110,000 per kilo, double last year's prices," she said.

According to Nguyen Nam Hai, chairman of the Vietnam Coffee and Cocoa Association, Vietnam's coffee exports in the first eight months of the year reduced in volume but showed a significant increase in value compared to the same period in 2023.

"Vietnam exported over one million tonnes of coffee, earning USD3.99 billion. The export fell by 12.5 per cent in volume but surged by 34.8 per cent in value year-on-year," he said. "The higher price of robusta coffee brings great benefits to Vietnam's coffee industry because about 94 per cent of Vietnam's coffee growing area have planted this variety."

In the first half of September, almost all of Vietnam's coffee exports were robusta, 15,155 tonnes, earning USD76.6 million at an average price of USD5,053 per tonne.

During a trading session on October 9, the price of robusta coffee on the London trading floor for January 2025 delivery was USD4,684 per tonne, USD24 higher than the previous session.
