Known as Thak Con, the festival will take place at the Vietnam National Village for Ethnic Culture and Tourism in Dong Mo as a highlight of a month-long programme showcasing Khmer culture.
Traditionally celebrated by the Khmer community in Can Tho, formerly part of Soc Trang Province, the three-day festival is held to honour deities and ancestors and pray for favourable weather, good harvests and peaceful lives.
The recreated ceremony will run from 9 am to 10 am on August 23, giving visitors an opportunity to learn about Khmer agricultural beliefs, spiritual life and cultural traditions.
The wider August programme, themed around exploring the Mekong Delta through Khmer culture, runs from August 1-28 and aims to preserve and promote the traditional heritage of southern Khmer communities.
More than 100 people from 16 ethnic groups representing 11 localities will participate in activities at the village. Around 30 Kinh and Khmer artisans and performers from Can Tho will join the main events on August 22-23.
Visitors will also be able to enjoy don ca tai tu music, Khmer five-tone orchestras, Sa dam drumming and Rom Vong dancing, as well as try making flattened green rice and sample Mekong Delta cuisine.
Throughout August, the Khmer cultural space will feature traditional arts, crafts and food, alongside activities showcasing the cultures of other ethnic groups represented at the village.
