Actress My Uyen abandoned her dream of opening a private theatre after failing to be able to afford the rent in the centre of Ho Chi Minh City.

Speaking with DTiNews, Uyen said, “I planned to set up my own theatre like actress Hong Van’s Phu Nhuan Theatre and actor Thanh Loc’s Idecaf Theatre. Despite the great efforts to raise the necessary funds, I couldn’t afford to pay the exorbitant rent for a land plot to build a theatre in the city centre. Therefore, as a result, I can’t realise my dream.”

She has been Deputy Director of state-owned Vo Van Tan Theatre since 2010 and will submit documents to seek the municipal Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism’s approval to recognise her as a Meritorious Artist.

My Uyen said, “Many artists in the north are often reluctant to apply for the title of People\'s Artist and Meritorious Artist. Initially, I myself also had the same feeling. I had to remember all the achievements and medals that I received during the process of being an artist to list them in the documents. However, my friends and colleagues encouraged me to make the submission.”

Being recognised as a Meritorious Artist will help boost her career, she said, but she noted that the title would have little real effect on her love for the arts.

Uyen is already busy enough with the work at the theatre and new films, and she’s put her personal life on hold to pursue her stage dreams.
