Readers donated nearly VND90m (USD4,200) to help a severely injured man and a woman with Guillain–Barré syndrome in Nghe An Province.
Lo Van Bong and his wife receive the donation
VND58,575,000 was transferred to the Thai ethnic family of Lo Van Bong and Lo Thi Nhung from Nhan Can Village.
Bong's wife, Lo Thi Nhung, has Guillain–Barré syndrome, a rapid-onset muscle weakness caused by the immune system damaging the peripheral nervous system. Dung is paralysed and her health is in critical condition. Their children could not go to school as the family's financial situation is in crisis. Without money for treatment, Bong brought his wife home and pursued herbal medicine practices.
After their story was published, many readers sent Bong over VND10m. Nguyen Hoang Yen from the communications office of Nghe An Friendship Hospital also advised Bong to bring his wife to hospital.
"We were given free meals and provided with VND3m from the hospital now kind readers have helped to continue my wife's treatment. Working in the fields meant I could never cover that much money. Now my wife has a chance to live," Bong said.
Lo Trung Thong, chairman of Thanh Son Commune, also expressed gratitude to the donors.
In a similar situation with Bong and Nhung is the family of Nguyen Thi Giang in Hoa Son Commune. Representative of Dan Tri and Nguyen Huu Tho, chairman of Hoa Son Commune, transferred VND30,510,000 to Giang.
Giang's family receive the donation
Le Huu Binh, Giang's husband, fell while gathering woods in the forest. Due to severe injuries, he was transferred to Nghe An General Hospital. Giang had to borrow money and sell almost everything to pay hospital charges.
"The house, which we inherited from our parents, was also sold," Giang said. "We don't have anything to sell anymore so I can't admit him to hospital. But with everyone's help, we'll return to hospital. Thank you very much," Giang said.
