The Chinese footballers showed plenty of defensive strength during the first half, frustrating their Australian rivals in the process.
The second half saw the Chinese team change to a more attacking formation, causing it to be a busy night for the Australian goalkeeper.
The breakthrough eventually came through Tang Jiali who opened the scoring in the 86th minute after receiving a pass from Ma Jun.
Despite the late goal for China the tie was not yet finished. The final minutes of the game saw the Australian footballers push for an equalizer, with striker Van Egmond getting on the scoresheet in the 93rd minute to level the game.
With the match finishing at 1-1, Australia finished top of their group. This means that they will now take on Vietnam in a play-off match.
The first leg is due to be held in Australia on March 6, with the second leg taking place in Vietnam five days later.
