After two years of preparation, the Vietnam Association of Consumption Goods Development (VACOD) was officially launched January 12.

The aim of the association is to link up producers, distributors, researchers and marketers of Vietnamese consumption goods for the domestic market.

The VACOD hopes to bridge gaps between different Vietnamese enterprises and entrepreneurs, as well as provide a platform for networking. It will also help to promote trademarks for Vietnamese companies in both domestic and international makets.

Deputy Minister of Industry and Trade Ho Thi Kim Thoa spoke very highly of the new association in a speech she gave at the launching ceremony.

She said, “I applaud the association’s aim to bring about partnerships and alliances among companies in Vietnam. The establishment of the VACOD will improve the current business environment and be an asset to the business community.”

Nguyen Hong Son, chairman of the board of directors of Hanoi Investment Development Group and vice-chairman of the Vietnamese Enterprise Association, was appointed chairman of the VACOD.

The campaign “Vietnamese Use Vietnamese Goods” was launched in order to promote the use of products made domestically.

The hope is that it will reduce the need for imports and reduce the trade deficit. The country’s trade deficit was around USD12.4 billion in 2010, accounting for 17.3% of the total export revenues and equal to the government’s pledge at the National Assembly’s meeting in early November 2010.
