Illegal gold mines set up deep inside protection forest
The Ministry of Public Security, Nam Dong District Military Command, Department of Forest Protection and the Management Board of Nam Dong Protection Forest visited the site and pinpointed three illegal mining locations deep inside the forest. In order to reach the sites, they had to walk 12 hours from the residential area in Thuong Quang Commune.
When the authorities arrived, the miners had already ran away, abandoning many tunnels, tents and equipment.
Le Thanh Ho, the vice-chairman of Nam Dong District People's Committee, said there were about 30 miners working at the sites, mostly from Thai Nguyen Province.
The authorities have made plans to destroy the tunnels and equipment.
