In Quang Tri Province, the Hai Lang District Department of Education and Training said Friday that 75 schools in the area have been deeply flooded and had to close, affecting over 2,000 students.

"Many schools and roads have been put between 20-80cm under water," the department said. "We had to temporarily close schools to ensure safety for students and teachers."

The neighbouring province of Quang Binh has also reported average rainfall of up to 100mm and water in local rivers are rising fast.

Authorities in Danang City had also asked local schools to close on Friday afternoon as the city was facing heavy rains and serious flooding on many roads.

It is forecasted that heavy rains would continue in the central region until October 19 with average rainfall of between 200-400mm.
