The section running through Tinh Hoa Commune in Quang Ngai City and Binh Chau Commune in Binh Son District has been hardest hit by the pollution.

When the tide rises, trash flows into the river gets trapped, and accumulates, piling up like an open landfill.

Along the river bank, different kinds of non-biodegradable plastic waste, such as plastic bags, styrofoam boxes, glass light bulbs, and containers with used oil, are found. This situation has been going on for many years.

The waste mostly comes from fishing ports and shipbuilding facilities along Kinh Giang River and Sa Ky fishing port in Binh Chau Commune. These ports discharge waste into the environment, causing it to drift and accumulate in the Chau Me Dong River.

The pollution has affected shrimp farming on the river.

Nguyen Thi Huong in Binh Chau Commune said that the accumulated rubbish has caused bad odours in nearby residential areas. The problem has been reported to local authorities many times, but nothing has been done to improve the situation.
