Rubbish blankets central HCM City after New Year countdown

Streets in central Ho Chi Minh City were left littered with rubbish after New Year countdown celebrations, as large crowds gathered to welcome the New Year.

Areas including Ton Duc Thang, Ham Nghi and Nguyen Hue streets and the Bach Dang Wharf were strewn with discarded plastic bottles, food containers, plastic bags and mats shortly after the festivities ended.

In some locations, waste accumulated along pavements and road barriers, affecting both cleanliness and traffic safety.

Sanitation workers were deployed overnight to clear the streets, but the recurring litter after major celebrations continues to highlight gaps in public awareness.

A local resident said the situation risked damaging the city’s image, especially among visitors, and urged people to dispose of rubbish properly to help keep public spaces clean.
