Rare wild cat caught in trap after villagers lose chickens

A household in Ca Mau Province sets a trap after their chickens mysteriously disappeared, catching a rare wild cat.

The Department of Economy, Infrastructure and Urban Affairs of Bac Lieu Ward, Ca Mau Province, stated on January 30 that the unit had coordinated with the Bac Lieu Forest Protection Department to receive and release a wild cat into its natural environment at the Bac Lieu bird sanctuary species and habitat conservation area.

Previously, a resident in Bac Lieu Ward, Ca Mau Province, voluntarily handed over a wild cat weighing approximately 2.5 kg to the Bac Lieu Ward People's Committee.

According to the resident, his domestic chickens had been frequently disappearing recently without clear reason. He decided to set a trap in the chicken coop. On the evening of January 28, he caught a wild cat in the trap.

Recognising it as a wild animal, the man reported it to local authorities. According to the Bac Lieu Forest Protection Department, the wild cat is an endangered and rare species.

After receiving the wild cat from the citizen, the units recorded the incident and processed it in accordance with legal regulations on the management of endangered, rare, and common forest animals, and the implementation of international conventions on international trade in endangered wild fauna and flora species.

The wild cat, scientifically known as Prionailurus Bengalensis, belongs to group IIB in the list of endangered and rare forest animals.
