Quang Nam woman discovers giant butterfly

A woman from Tam Phuoc commune in the central province of Quang Nam on July 31 caught a butterfly with wing span of up to 50 centimetres.

A woman from Tam Phuoc commune, Phu Ninh district in the central province of Quang Nam on July 31, caught a butterfly with wing span of up to 50 centimetres.

The giant butterfly

The woman, named Pham Thi Nhu Thao, was scared when she first saw the giant butterfly on a kumquat tree in front of her house.

Some measured the butterfly’s wings, which reached nearly 50cm. The wings have beautiful patterns.

Locals said that they saw such giant butterflies several years ago and they called them “buom khe” (thistle butterfly) or lady butterfly.

Some people believe that such giant butterflies have supernatural power and they flocked to Thao’s home to worship the butterfly to ask for luck.

However, in the Red Book of Vietnam, this giant butterfly species is named Attacus atlas. It is one of the biggest butterfly species in the world.

Thao was worried because so many people are flocking to her house to see the butterfly while she did not know how to take care it. She planed to release the butterfly.
