According to Bui Duc Ky, who filmed the encounter, the dolphins appeared at around 10.20 am on January 11 while he was out on a speedboat, relaxing and casting fishing nets. He said he was surprised to see the animals swimming together in a tight pod.
Ky estimated that there were around 15 dolphins, each weighing more than 100 kg, including one striking white dolphin. Notably, the pod was seen very close to shore, at a distance of only about 150 metres.
Local residents said dolphins have appeared in the waters off Sam Son before, but sightings of such a large pod swimming so near the coast are rare, drawing surprise and excitement from those who witnessed the scene.
