The pilot test on dioxin-contaminated soil at Bien Hoa Airbase in the southern province of Dong Nai, using Japanese technology has shown positive results.

A seminar was held in Hanoi on Tuesday to evaluate the pilot test on a combination of technologies for the remediation of dioxin-contaminated soil at Bien Hoa Airbase. The collaborative event was organised by the Centre for Technology Environmental Treatment/Chemical Command and Shimizu Corporation Japan.

The event saw the participation of Deputy Minister of Defence Nguyen Chi Vinh and representatives from different Vietnamese and Japanese brands.

According to the Chemical Command, the Centre for Technology Environmental Treatment under the command and Shimizu Corporation Japan co-operated to pilot the soil washing technology for dioxin treatment at Bien Hoa Airbase in the 2019-2020 period.

A soil washing facility was built at the airport for the dioxin treatment during the pilot time. The facility which worked eight hours per day helped to treat 120-150 cubic metres of soil.

The Centre for Technology Environmental Treatment and Vietnam’s other concerned agencies closely supervised the pilot test which totally did not disseminate dioxin into the environment.

People who implemented the test were examined and found for not being exposed to dioxin.

Experts said Shimizu Corporation Japan’s soil washing technology was effective for dioxin treatment at Bien Hoa Airbase. It also helped to save time and costs and is environmentally-friendly.

Bien Hoa Airport is considered one of the country’s dioxin hotspots. According to assessments from Vietnam and the US, some 500,000 cubic metres of dioxin-contaminated land in the airport need to be treated, requiring huge investment in terms of finance and technology.
