People's Committees will advise on school shortages

District People's Committees in Hanoi have been asked to report on the situation regarding school shortages.

District People\'s Committees in Hanoi have been asked to report on the situation regarding school shortages and propose suitable locations for the construction of new public infrastructure, especially schools.

The request was made by Nguyen The Thao, Chairman of the Hanoi People\'s Committee following previous requests that many district-level People\'s Committees failed to respond to.

Many areas, mostly in the inner city, are lacking State-owned pre-schools and primary schools.

Out of the 17 new residential areas, 15 do not have sufficient number of State-owned schools, forcing many parents to send their children to non-State schools that are generally more expensive.

City authorities attributed the situation to the rising population and limited land in the inner city. This had resulted in classrooms being overcrowded beyond the national standard for suitable distribution of pupils per school set by the Ministry of Education and Training.

The capital lacks more than 5.4 million square meters of classroom space to accommodate pupils.

In the wake of the situation, district-level People\'s Committees have been tasked with reviewing the land available within their areas and proposing suitable locations for new public infrastructure, particularly schools, in co-operation with the Department of Planning and Architecture.

They must also look at reclaiming land that is being inefficiently used for production to build new schools or other public infrastructure.
