New bridge, new cracks

Despite the $5M spent on repairing the Thang Long Bridge, after 3 months of operation, cracks have been found on its surface.

Despite the VND97 billion ($5 million) spent on repairing the Thang Long bridge, after 3 months of operation, its surface has been discovered to be cracked and sunken.

DTiNews saw over 10 cracks on the newly repaired bridge. On average, each crack is 1 metre in length and 4-5 centimetres in width.

The cracks can be found in both lanes including one started from Hanoi to Noi Bai and another one in the return lane.

Notably, on some parts of the bridge there are 3 consecutive cracks.

In addition, it’s easy to find patches on the road because some flaws were fixed recently.

DTiNews found that some parts of the lane from Noi Bai Airport to Hanoi city centre were blocked for repairing at nights.

Inquiring about this issue, the Project Management Unit 2 (PMU 2) under General Department of Road, Ministry of Transport and leaders of contractor said that the cracks were found last month and are under repair. The Institute of Transport Science & Technology, the design unit will take responsibility of uncovering the reasons.

“The site has just been repaired and is under a guarantee period, thus, the contractor will take care of fixing the flaws. However, there are several cracks on that don’t affect vehicle traffic on the bridge, but we cannot say whether or not they will impact the construction quality in long term," said Nguyen Nang The, Deputy Manager of PMU2.

The cracks have concerned the public because the bridge was just repaired 3 months ago.
