At around 2 am on Friday, many households who breed fish on Nghen River in Thach Ha District’s Thach Son Commune discovered the dead fish.

Around 50 tonnes of fish have been found dead in a river in the central province of Ha Tinh.
Nguyen Thi Hien in Song Hai Village was shocked to see a large amount of her fish dead.
According to Tran Huu Nghia, chairman of Thach Son Commune, the fish deaths occur in the locality every year, but this year, the amount was much higher than usual.
The cause of the fish deaths could be due to oxygen deficiency, Nghia guessed, adding that after harvest time, the straw in local fields gets soaked in water, creating suspended particles in the water. Then, the water with the particles flows into the river, leading to an oxygen reduction.
Nghia noted that the commune reported the case to district authorities to consider measures to support the affected households.
Meanwhile, samples of the dead fish have been taken for testing.
