Vietnam has a coastline stretching from North to South, making it easy for waste to drift into the ocean. The volume of waste in Vietnam is increasing with rapid urbanization.

Therefore, this summer, Mitsui O.S.K. Lines will coordinate with the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) to conduct feasibility studies in the nation during the one-year period based on an intention to cooperate with the Government of Vietnam to implement this project.

According to Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, field feasibility studies will include calculating the amount of plastic and other waste that can be collected at sea, as well as where and how to build a dedicated vessel for this project.

The Japanese firm pledged to establish a marine waste collection system suitable for sea areas through a project supported by JICA, under which the company can then expand its marine waste collection business to other areas.

Earlier Japan had run two commercial ships with marine waste collection systems operated by several companies, including Mitsui O.S.K. Lines.
