The money would be used to to help Vinashin pay salary and social insurance for its labourers.
Currently, Vietnam Shipbuilding Industry Group (Vinashin) owes salaries totaling VND102.6 billion (USD5.13 million) to employees and VND134 billion (USD6.7 million) of social insurance benefits to its staff.
Earlier, the Vietnam General Confederation of Labour sent an official dispatch to the government requesting that Vinashin be added into the list of firms which will receive preferential loans to support their workers after bad impacts by the world economic slowdown.
As of June 30, 2009, Vinashin’s total debts reached VND86 trillion (USD4.3 billion) due to its massive and ineffective investments. Under the government’s restructure plan, the shipbuilder is requested to only focus on the main three areas of shipbuilding and repair, supporting industry development and training shipbuilding human resources. The group doesn’t expect to earn profits until after 2015.
Vinashin inspects labour regulations of affiliate
A delegation of Vinashin, led by General Director Truong Van Tuyen started investigating complaints of over 300 workers in Danang Shipbuilding Factory.
The group on December 1 worked directly with these workers who earlier sent petitions to authorities of Danang City to complain that they were often unemployed and not allowed to benefit from social insurance.
They also said that they had not yet received any support from a VND3.2-billion (USD150,000) compensation amount given by the municipal People’s Committee after the factory’s relocation.
Within one week, the inspection team will focus on dealing with worker petitions and checking labour contract termination, late salary payment and several other issues.
