According to the Hue City Forest Protection Department, the red-whiskered bulbul is a common species. However, they are subject to the regulations governing the management of endangered, rare, and precious forest wildlife and plants.

In recent years, Hue forest rangers have handled multiple cases of the illegal trade of red-whiskered bulbul birds. The most notable incident occurred in 2024, when nearly 1,000 birds of unlawful origin were confiscated and subsequently released back into the wild.
