HCM City sees rise in infectious diseases

HCM City is witnessing a sharp rise in infectious diseases, including hand, foot and mouth disease (HFMD), dengue fever, and Covid-19.

According to HCM City’s Centre for Disease Control, during the week between May 19 and 25, HFMD accounted for the highest number of infections among all contagious diseases, with 1,000 new cases, up nearly 34 percent from the four-week average.

By May 25, the city recorded 7,735 HFMD cases, with Binh Tan, District 6, and Nha Be most affected.

The city reported 270 dengue fever cases in the week, up from the four-week average. Since early this year, the city has recorded 7,987 dengue fever cases, more than double the same period last year. Can Gio and Cu Chi districts and Thu Duc City report the highest incidence rates per 100,000 residents.

HCM City’s infectious disease surveillance system has found a sharp uptick in Covid-19 cases, rising from 26 in the 20th week to 63 in the 21st week. Despite the surge, total cases since the beginning of the year remain at over 180, lower than last year.

Meanwhile, the number of measles patients has dropped, with just 63 cases in the 21st week, down 43.9 percent from the four-week average. Since the start of the outbreak, the city has logged 9,452 cases.

Amid the multiple infectious diseases, people are urged to wash their hands regularly, maintain hygiene, wear masks in public, avoid crowded places, stay physically active, and eat well. Those with symptoms like cough, fever, or shortness of breath should seek medical care quickly.
