At first, the contractor, Trung Nam Group, used to pump the water into Doi Canal. But as the dyke project was halted a month ago, the pump also stopped working.
"We are deeply flooded when there are high tides. I really want the authorities to have a solution quickly so that our lives can return to normal," she said.
60-year-old Nguyen Hoa said not only their lives were turned upside down, but also many people have had skin diseases. "The smell is unbearable. If this situation isn't dealt with then we may have to move elsewhere," he said.
The build-transfer contract of the contractor and local authorities already expired on June 26. The banks stopped disbursing money so the contractor couldn't continue the project. According to the contractor, they tried to pay for the pump with their own money but it had surpassed their limit.
Phan Duy Nhat, vice chairman of Ward 7 People's Committee, confirmed that the project was halted due to a lack of funds. Pollution has been recorded from the house 5 to 30 on Dinh An Tai Street.
"We have asked the contractor to continue pumping water to Doi Canal to help the locals while District 8 authorities find a solution for this problem," Nhat said.
