Parents of elementary students at many schools in the city received messages from teachers informing them that the schools would close today after the weather forecast said that the temperature in the area was 9.9 degrees Celsius at 6am.
In a document sent to local schools on Monday, the city education department said that if temperatures fall below 10 degrees Celsius elementary school students in Hanoi can skip classes, and secondary school students can do so if they are below seven degrees. Schools should also be flexible with class timings if the weather is cold but temperatures remain above the threshold.
Hanoi and many other localities in the north are experiencing the coldest weather this winter with temperatures falling to between 1-5 degrees Celsius in some northwest localities on Tuesday morning.
Some northern mountainous peaks including Phia Oac in Cao Bang and Fansipan in Lao Cai have seen frosts since Monday afternoon as temperatures plunged to minus five degrees Celsius.
