Hanoi adds 1,800 classrooms for new school year

Hanoi is adding around 1,800 classrooms for the new school year, including 800 already in use, as the capital expands teaching capacity following a major reorganisation of its school network.

As of August 10, Hanoi had completed the restructuring of its schools ahead of the new academic year, reducing the number of administrative school units by 53.3 per cent, or 1,251 schools.

Despite the consolidation, classroom capacity is expanding. Around 800 new classrooms have already been put into use, while another 1,000 are being completed.

The restructuring has also shifted staffing towards teaching. The education sector has cut 2,366 management positions while adding nearly 2,000 teachers, helping address longstanding teacher shortages at many schools.

Schools are being reorganised into two models: single-level schools with multiple campuses and multi-level schools combining primary, lower and, in some cases, upper secondary education.

Hanoi has also called for greater use of technology and modern management methods to maintain consistent education standards across different campuses. Schools are being equipped with cameras, monitoring screens and other management systems.

Principals have been instructed to better allocate teachers and make use of facilities freed up by the restructuring.

Local authorities have also been asked to provide funding to complete toilets, handwashing areas and other essential facilities before the new school year.

Surplus administrative rooms and other spaces are to be converted into classrooms where possible, particularly at schools with large class sizes.

Suitable areas will also be turned into multifunctional classrooms of at least 80 square metres, equipped with screens and modern facilities for arts, physical education, English, emotional learning and creative activities.
