The bone-chilling cold spell is sweeping through the northern region of Vietnam, bringing temperatures of below 10 degrees centigrade to many localities, particularly in mountainous areas.

Phja Oac Mountain in Nguyen Binh District’s Thanh Cong Commune is among areas hardest hit by the cold wave with the temperature of minus five degrees centigrade.

According to local residents, tourists need to keep warm when visiting the mountain at this time.

Thanh Cong Commune authorities have instructed local schools to take extra measures to care for students amid the cold weather. They have also established inspection teams to help people protect their livestock.

Phja Oac is the second highest mountain in Cao Bang with 1,931 metres just behind Phia Da at 1,987 metres.

According to the National Centre for Hydro-meteorological Forecasting, this morning, January 23, the lowest temperature in the northern and northern central regions ranged between 7-10 degrees centigrade. High mountainous areas saw temperatures below zero degree centigrade.

Hanoi recorded temperature of 9.9 degrees centigrade, with many nursery and primary schools temporarily closed to ensure the children’s health.
