The Danang Circular Economy Hub (DCEH) was officially launched in the central city on November 11.

The Danang Circular Economy Hub is launched on November 11.
As part of the Accelerator Lab Vietnam programme, DCEH was launched by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the Danang Entrepreneurship Support Company (DNES).
Addressing the event, the Chairman of the Danang Startup Council, Vo Duy Khuong, said that Vietnam was 68th in the world in terms of area, 15th in terms of population, but is currently ranking fourth in the amount of plastic waste dumping into the sea, with over 1.83 million tonnes per year.
"This situation urges us to change our development methods," he said. "And a circular economy is considered the best solution for us to both boost economic growth and reduce natural resources exploitation and waste generation."
Khuong said that the Danang Circular Economy Hub will provide financial aid for innovative startup projects and solutions about how to improve the quality of solid waste treatment in Danang, and other parts across the central region.
Speaking at the DCEH launching event, Deputy Resident Representative of UNDP Vietnam, Sitara Syed said that some 1,100 tonnes of solid waste is being generated every day in Danang and the amount is predicted to double in four-five years. Some 90 percent of that solid waste was being buried at local dumping sites, which is badly affecting the city's environment and planning.

Deputy Resident Representative of UNDP Vietnam, Sitara Syed speaks at the event.
"DCEH will focus on sustainable growth by training human resources on developing circular economy in the area and promoting green consumption," the UNDP official said.
At the event, DCEH launched its first Green Avengers programme which aims to seek better environmental protection solutions for the city's sustainable development.
The programme is open to all individuals and organisations across the central region. Outstanding entrants will be selected to participate in the BOOTCAMP from November 11-15 where trainees will be provided with general knowledge about circular economy, waste management and system thinking. In addition, they will be supported to develop their own ideas.
