Talented 17-year-old chess player Nguyen Anh Khoi has won the standard event at the ongoing Asian Junior Chess Championship in Indonesia with one round to spare.

Khoi, Elo rating 2516, claimed victory at the tournament after enjoying seven wins and a single draw. This record earned the Vietnamese chess player a total of 7.5 points and gave him the lead at the tournament.

Khoi's overall rating performance following the first eight rounds stands at 2754, equivalent to that of a Super Grandmaster.

Despite not yet playing the competition’s ninth match, which will take place on July 8, Khoi was named as the championship’s winner after amassing an insurmountable lead, one point ahead of second-placed Kaumandur Srihari, Elo 2441, with a better head-to-head record against him.

During the championship Khoi has also enjoyed victory in the rapid chess event and will soon be awarded the Grandmaster title by the World Chess Federation.

Khoi aims to compete a hat-trick of titles as he moves on to compete in the competition’s blitz event.
