Bio-ethanol (E5) got off to a promising start after hitting the consumer market in Ho Chi Minh City over a week ago.

Many people lined up to buy bio-ethanol

Many kinds of vehicles including motorbikes, trucks, taxi or personal cars bought E5 at Hoang Nguyen Petrol Station on 220 Dien Bien Phu Road, Ward 22, Binh Thanh District.

Nguyen Thi My Duyen, residing at Ngo Tat To Road, Ward 19, Binh Thanh District, said that she came to the station was buying E5 for her second time.

“I wanted to try E5 as soon as I heard about it. I found that my scooter still ran smoothly and the price is cheaper than conventional petrol. I also decide to use this kind of petrol because I was heard that it helped protect environment,” added Duyen.

Nguyen Van Thuong, Manager of the Hoang Nguyen Petrol Station said that they sold only a limited amount of E5 on the first day but their E5 business is getting better now.

Their average amount of E5 sold each day is over 1,500 litres at this petrol station. Many companies had purchase contracts of standard A92 or A95 unleaded petrol but now decided to buy E5 instead.

“Many customers returned to buy E5 after trying it for the first time. Until now, we haven’t received any complaints from customers. Drivers told us that E5 had good quality and did not make the engine hot,” added Thuong.

Petrol station No. 5, located at 147, National Road 13, Thu Duc District, they have seen signs of very promising business results and say E5 sales are improving every day.

“Most of our customers came to buy regular A92 or A95 petrol. However, many changed their decision and bought E5 instead after we told them to give it a try,” said a worker at station No. 5.

Despite strong sales, some people are still worried about the alternative fuel.

Thuy, from Co Giang Ward, District 1 said, “I heard that vehicles running on E5 would consume less petrol and that it was good for the environment. I have not tried it because I am worried about how the engine will run using the bio-ethanol. I have used petrol A95 for years.”

Ly Hong Duc, Vice General Director of Petrovietnam Oil Corporation, said that before being offered on the market, E5 petrol was used on a trial basis to collect assessments from consumers who used it. The trial period was used to check how vehicle engines worked with this kind of petrol, measure the amount of emission and assess its quality. The results showed that E5 petrol worked fine.
