Vung Tau sandwich shop fined for mass food poisoning incident

A sandwich shop in the southern province of Vung Tau has been fined VND125 million (USD 4,921) for causing food poisoning that affected up to 373 people.

The 373 were hospitalised with symptoms such as abdominal pain, vomiting, and diarrhoea after consuming sandwiches from Co Ba Ben Dinh Bakery in Vung Tau City.

The Ba Ria-Vung Tau Department of Health collected samples of boiled pork, pork pate, pork sausage, and pork gravy from the bakery for testing. The results showed that the food samples tested positive for Salmonella bacteria.

Under the decision of the provincial People’s Committee Chairman, Nguyen Van Tho, the bakery owner, Nguyen Thi Thanh Thao, 42, was fined VND 125 million for food safety violations, particularly for lacking a certificate of compliance with food safety standards. Additionally, the bakery’s staff were found not wearing gloves while handling food.

Thao will be responsible for covering the full treatment costs for all the victims hit by the food poisoning.
