The Vietnamese Ministry of Transport has approved a total investment of VND635 billion (USD25 million) to rebuild the Phong Chau Bridge in Phu Tho Province, which collapsed under the impact of Typhoon Yagi.
A pontoon bridge is currently being used as a temporary replacement for the collapsed Phong Chau Bridge.
The investment for the bridge will be sourced from the state budget.
Under the Ministry of Transport’s approval, the new Phong Chau Bridge will be 653 metres long, linking Phung Nguyen Commune in Lam Thao District with Van Xuan Commune in Tam Nong District.
The bridge will be constructed using reinforced and prestressed concrete, with a width of 20.5 metres to align with the roadbed.
The project spanning over the Red River is classified as an emergency construction under the Prime Minister's directive.
The bridge construction is scheduled to be completed in 2025.
Phong Chau Bridge, which was put into operation in 1995, collapsed on September 7 due to rising water levels in the Red River in the wake of super typhoon Yagi, killing four people.
