Tran Thi Tri is nearly bed-bound at home. After getting married, Tri had three children but her husband died in a traffic accident while their youngest daughter was only four months old. Her oldest daughter is now 10 years old and the youngest is 6 years old.

"We borrowed VND100m (USD4,300) so that my husband could open a repair workshop. We all depended on him and we still owe VND80m," Tri said.

After the death of her husband, Tri did farmwork and borrowed more money to raise some pigs. Unfortunately, her pigs died and the debt grew. Tri asked her mother to look after the children while she looked for work as a home help.

In early 2018, Tri often had a backache and was told that she had a disc herniation and pelvic inflammation. In a short time, she was almost paralysed. "In 2016, I had an accident but I thought it wasn't serious. Doctors said I would need a VND100m operation but how can I find such money? How will my children live then?" Tri said.

Tran Thi Lieu, deputy head of My Loc Commune Women's Union, said they had been encouraging the children to go to school but fears that their studies would be interrupted.

"We fold a star every day to wish for our mother's health," said Phan Thuy Linh, Tri's oldest daughter.
