Preschools in HCM City, Dong Nai and many other localities are scheduled to reopen from February after a long suspension due to the Covid-19 pandemic. However, many of them face a shortage of teachers.

During the pandemic, lots of teachers in HCM City’s nursery schools quit their jobs, while others have returned to their hometowns to avoid Covid-19 and have not yet returned to the city.

A nursery school in Binh Thanh is looking for teachers aged 22-45 to take care of children aged from three months to five years old. The monthly salary for them is between VND6-14 million, excluding subsidies.

The lack of teachers has been seen at many nursery schools in districts 1, 12 and 7 and Binh Thanh and Hoc Mon districts.

A preschool in Hoc Mon District has posted job ads on its Facebook page with a starting salary of VND5 million per month.

Luong Thi Hong Diep, head of the Nursery Education Board, said up to 3,200 nursery schools in HCM City have been closed for between 3-6 months because of the pandemic.

Preschool children have stayed at home due to the pandemic during the 2021-22 academic year.

The total number of preschool children eligible to attend school is about 339,300, an increase of 5,140 compared to the previous school year.

About 54 per cent study at private preschools. The city has 920 private preschools with 16,260 teachers and more than 183,400 children, an increase of nearly 3,600 children compared to the previous school year.
