Five sacks containing 110 kilos of methamphetamine are found in Hanoi on August 30.
According to a report released on Friday at meeting held by the Ministry of Public Security, a passenger bus of the Nghe An-Hanoi route stopped by the My Dinh Stadium where the driver assistant took out five sacks and two two black plastic bags from the trunk and left them on the road on the afternoon of August 30.
After the bus left, two young men arrived on a motorbike to take the sacks and bags. But some police officers also came immediately and checked the goods to find 110 kilos of methamphetamine inside the five sacks and 170 electronic cigarettes inside the plastic bags.
The goods were all sized.
The bus driver assistant, Ho Quang Nhan, 25, and two other men, Quan Trong Cao and Ly Van Huy were all arrested.
Following Cao's statement, police also seized 62 kilos of methamphetamine which was hidden in three cartons at the house of his neighbour in Hanoi's Bac Tu Liem District.
Expanding their investigations into the case, police arrested Le Minh Toi in HCM City and seized 39 kilos of drugs.
The ring's leader is a Lao man who is living in Vietnam, whose name has not been disclosed.
Lieutenant general Nguyen Van Vien from the Ministry of Public Security said that drug trafficking is still rampant on waterways, airway, and post.
"In the first 11 months of this year, we've dealt with more than 28,700 cases, detaining over 48,600 violators and seizing 645 kilos of heroin, 1.50 tonnes of cannabis, 3.10 tonnes and 3.60 million tablets of methamphetamine, and 56 kilos of opium," he said. "Many drug traffickers are now taking advantage of high information technologies in their activities."
