Lao Cai rice fields devastated by typhoon

Rice fields in the northern mountainous province of Lao Cai have been left desolate and covered entirely in rocks following Typhoon Yagi.

The fields covering 60 hectares in Trinh Tuong Commune in Bat Xat District were flattened and blanketed with a layer of rocks nearly 10 metres deep and stretching for about 4 kilometres. Around 3 million cubic metres of stones were estimated to have flowed onto the field.

Due to landslides, the streams along Pho Moi 1, Pho Moi 2, and Phan Ho villages in Trinh Tuong Commune are filled with rocks.

According to the commune people’s committee, rocks cover an area of 150 hectares in the locality. In some places, the rock layer reaches a height of 6-7 metres, surpassing the roadbed.

Dozens of houses of households by streams in the commune are buried.

Pham Van Hung, vice chairman of the commune, said that the destruction of the rice field had affected as many as 232 households, with 113 households losing their entire farmland.

The chairman of Lao Cai People’s Province has agreed to provide local farmers VND20 million (USD790.51) per hectare for rice fields that cannot be restored.
